Ahmedabad Dandiya Guide: Stick Dance, Properly
Almost every Ahmedabad ground advertises Dandiya. Far fewer programme a real Dandiya Raas section with the floor space and the tempo it needs — which is why people regularly buy a pass expecting stick dance and spend the night in a Garba circle.
This is what Dandiya actually is, how to do it, and how to tell a genuine Dandiya night from a Garba night that sells sticks at the gate.
What Dandiya Raas is
Dandiya Raas is a stick dance performed in pairs or in two facing lines, where partners strike each other’s sticks on the beat and rotate through the line so you progressively dance with everyone. It is traditionally read as a playful depiction of the battle between Durga and Mahishasura — the sticks standing in for swords. Structurally it is the opposite of Garba: paired rather than circular, and it needs real space per person.
How to hold and strike
One stick in each hand, held loosely near the base rather than gripped in the middle — a tight grip is how knuckles get hit. Strikes land on the stick, never the hand, and the standard pattern is a sequence of taps with your partner interspersed with a turn. Start slow. The tempo builds through the section, and a pair that started controlled can follow it up; a pair that started frantic cannot.
Telling a real Dandiya night from marketing
Two signals are reliable. First, the event name or billing explicitly says Dandiya or Raas rather than just listing it among features. Second, the venue has a defined floor rather than one mass circle — paired stick dance cannot happen in a crush. A DJ-led ground running continuous high-tempo Garba will sell you sticks and never slow down enough to use them. 13 of the Ahmedabad 2026 listings are billed around Dandiya or Raas.
When it runs in the evening
Dandiya usually sits mid-evening, after the opening aarti and warm-up circle and before the late Mandli stretch. That timing matters: it tends to run while the floor is still filling, because once a ground is at capacity the programme shifts to circular Garba, which packs more people into the same space. If Dandiya is your priority, arrive at or shortly after the listed start rather than at peak.
Sticks: buy your own
Most Ahmedabad grounds sell dandiya sticks at the gate, but at a markup, and whatever lengths remain late in the evening are what you get. Buying your own pair beforehand is cheaper and lets you pick a length suited to your height, which makes a real difference across several hours. Decorated sticks look better; plain lacquered ones last longer.
Planning a group around Dandiya
Because the form is paired, an odd-numbered group always has someone sitting out the section. Plan in even numbers. If you are booking eight or more, ask for a reserved zone as well — Dandiya needs contiguous floor space, and a group spread across a crowded ground cannot form lines.

Questions this guide gets asked
Where can I find real Dandiya nights in Ahmedabad in 2026?
The events billed specifically around Dandiya or Raas are listed on our Ahmedabad Dandiya 2026 page with venues, dates and start times. Most other grounds include a Dandiya section inside a wider Garba night.
Do I need to bring my own dandiya sticks?
No — sticks are sold at most venues. Buying your own beforehand is cheaper and lets you pick a length that suits your height, which matters over a long night.
Is Dandiya easier than Garba for beginners?
In some ways, yes. The pattern repeats more simply and you are following a partner rather than a whole circle, which makes it easier to join mid-song. The catch is that you need a partner and enough floor space.
How do I avoid hitting hands with the sticks?
Hold the sticks loosely near the base rather than gripping the middle, aim strikes at your partner’s stick rather than at their hand, and start at a controlled tempo. Most knocks happen when one partner is rushing the beat.
