Ahmedabad Garba 2026: The Complete Guide to the Dance
Most Garba pages tell you which event to buy. This one is about the dance itself: what Garba is, how it differs from the other forms you will meet on the same floor, and how to join a circle without standing at the edge working out what is happening.
Ahmedabad is the best place in the world to learn it, because on any of the nine nights there are more than forty grounds running simultaneously and the standard on the floor ranges from complete beginner to lifelong.
What Garba actually is
Garba is a circular dance performed around a centre — traditionally a garbo, a perforated earthen pot holding a lamp, representing the womb and the divine feminine. The circle moves anticlockwise, and the whole form is built on repetition: a short step pattern repeats for the length of a song, speeding up as it goes. That repetition is why it is learnable in an evening. You are not memorising choreography, you are locking into one pattern and holding it.
Garba, Raas, Dandiya and Mandli — four different things
Garba is the circle, danced with hands and claps, no props. Raas is the stick form, danced in pairs or facing lines — Dandiya Raas is the same thing named for the sticks. Mandli is not a separate dance but a separate floor: a smaller, faster circle for experienced dancers, usually running late with live dhol. Most Ahmedabad grounds run Garba and Raas across one night, and 15 of the 2026 listings include a Mandli section. Knowing which you are walking into is the difference between a good night and a confusing one.
The basic step
The foundational Ahmedabad pattern is a three-step with a clap — step, step, step, clap — moving anticlockwise around the circle, with the clap on the turn. There are countless regional variations and speeds layered on top, but almost every floor in the city resolves to something close to this. Watch the feet of the person ahead of you rather than trying to read the whole circle, and you will have it inside twenty minutes.
Floor etiquette that actually matters
Join at a gap rather than pushing in. Match the direction and speed of the circle before adding anything of your own. If you lose the rhythm, step outward to the edge rather than stopping where you are — a stationary person mid-circle is how collisions happen. Do not film from inside the circle. And the outer rings are always slower than the inner ones, which makes them the right place to start.
How the Ahmedabad night is structured
Grounds open with aarti, then a slow warm-up circle while the floor fills. The peak runs roughly 9:00 PM to midnight. After midnight the crowd thins and, at venues that run it, the Mandli section begins — tighter circle, faster pace, live dhol. Start times across the 2026 listings range from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and that single number tells you which part of this arc you are buying.
Where the Garba is in Ahmedabad
Ticketed Garba is concentrated in the western belt — SG Highway, Bopal, Shela, Makarba, Bhadaj, Sindhu Bhavan Road, Ambli and Sola. 10 areas currently have listed events. The rest of the city has enormous amounts of Garba, but it is society and neighbourhood Garba: free, unticketed, often better dancing, and invisible to every listing site including this one.
What to wear, practically
Chaniya choli or kediyu is standard and some venues require it. But footwear is the decision that determines how your night ends — flat mojris or juttis with grip, never heels on a farm ground, and a spare pair in the car. Open grounds are dusty by the third hour, and changing shoes transforms the rest of the evening.

Questions this guide gets asked
What is the difference between Garba and Dandiya?
Garba is a circular dance using hands and claps, with no props. Dandiya — properly Dandiya Raas — uses sticks and is danced in pairs or facing lines. Most Ahmedabad grounds run both across a single night, but only a few are billed specifically around Dandiya.
Can I learn Garba in one night?
The basic three-step pattern, yes — most people have it within twenty minutes. Arrive at the listed start time, join the outer ring, and watch the feet of the person ahead of you. The first ninety minutes is the only window where the tempo is slow enough to learn in.
What is Mandli Garba?
Not a different dance but a different floor: a smaller, faster circle for experienced dancers, usually to live dhol, running late in the night. It does not slow down for newcomers, so it is not the place to learn.
Do I need a partner for Garba?
No. Garba is danced in a circle and works perfectly well alone — you join the ring and follow it. Raas and Dandiya are paired, which is why groups planning around those sections do better with an even headcount.
